Thought for the day:
Three people were at work on a construction site. All were doing the same job, but when each was asked what the job was, the answers varied. "Breaking rocks," the first replied. "Earning my living," the second
said. "Helping to build a cathedral," said the third.

Senior START
Senior START is a one-day event geared at helping students who
are getting ready to enter the job market so that they can be
successful in their job search. This event is hosted by Career
& Counseling Staff each fall and spring semester. Workshops
addressing interviewing tips, successful job search strategies
and preparing an effective resume are available, as well as an
etiquette luncheon hosted by Natrelle Long.
Senior START for Spring 2004 also involved mock interviews in
which representatives from ASARCO, Amarillo Independent School
District, Amarillo National Bank, Beef Products, Pantex, Cal
Farley's Boys Ranch, City of Amarillo, and JMW Associates
provided an opportunity for students to experience an interview
with a professional human resources individual. Students were
able to get feedback from the professionals on the students'
interview strengths as well as areas they might need to work on.

Success Timeline
Are you the type of
person that needs a well thought-out plan in order to get your job search
underway? Maybe you are the kind of person who waits until the very last
minute -- after graduation -- to even think about getting a job. Or you
could be the person who falls somewhere between well planned and spur of the
moment.
Regardless of your preparation style, Career & Counseling Services has proven timelines of what
job search strategies and techniques you should use. We have timelines
starting with freshman year through post-graduation. Are you more than a
year away from graduation? Good news! There are things you need to be
doing NOW to improve your employability.
FACTOID:
National statistics indicate that it typically takes 18 months to secure a position in your field if you do not
have experience. It will take 9 months to find a job in your field if you do have experience.
Career & Counseling Services recommends that students start seriously looking for a job at least
12 months prior to graduation. The obvious things you need to address are
polishing your résumé and cover letter. Do you know how to target both
documents to the jobs you are seeking? What job search strategies will you
use? How do you identify employers that hire people with your degree or
employers you want to work for? All these issues and much more are covered
within the "College Success Timeline" webpage found at the following link:
http://wtcareer.wtamu.edu/cs/student/successtimeline.htm.
Don't let another day go by without a game plan for your job search. Alumni, December 2004
graduates, May 2005 graduates and beyond, get moving. Start today. Don't
just look for a job. Do the right things to secure a career.

Succeeding with Phone Interviews
Shrinking recruiting budgets are forcing many companies to limit the number of on-campus
interviews they conduct. Visiting larger schools with an extensive pool of
qualified candidates just makes more economic sense.
So how do the myriad of great candidates from smaller schools (like WTAMU) get interviews with
major employers? Many companies conduct screening interviews over the
phone. This cost-effective way to make contact with a large number of job
seekers is becoming more and more popular. Phone interviews allow companies
to identify the strongest candidates and arrange in-person interviews at a
later date. This way, companies use their recruiting budget more
effectively.
Preparing for a phone interview can be nerve-racking. To help,
check out this terrific article about phone interview etiquette
. It will provide preparation tips and ideas to make the most of the interview. In the article, you will also find a link to
view a sample phone interview log. This is a great tool to stay
organized and increase your effectiveness during the interview.
Lastly, we are always available in Career Services to coach and help you prepare for phone
interviews. Call us at (806) 651-2345 or come by our office in VHAC 210, and we will be happy to help.
Good luck!

Graduate School Entrance Exams
Just as with undergraduate admissions, graduate school applications usually require
standardized test scores. The test(s) you'll take depend on what type of graduate degree you're seeking. Check with the school(s) to which you plan
to apply for information about required exams.
Graduate entrance exams include the following:
The Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE)
Many students planning to attend graduate school take both the General and Subject GRE tests.
Further information about the tests -- including how to register and how to prepare -- is available at www.gre.org.
The Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
The LSAT is required by nearly all law schools approved by the American Bar Association. More
information is available at www.lsat.org.
The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT®)
The MCAT is primarily a multiple-choice exam that tests knowledge of science as well as skills
(such as problem solving and critical thinking) desirable for success in the medical profession. Further information is available at
www.aamc.org/mcat.
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT®)
The GMAT is taken by students planning to apply to graduate management programs (such as an
MBA program). You can find information about making a test appointment and about preparing for a graduate management program at
www.mba.com.

Test Anxiety?
There is no doubt about it, for most people, testing is stressful. Because exam results can determine whether you
pass or fail a class, earn a scholarship, get admitted to a desired program, or even earn entry into a professional school, graduate program, job or
career, it is natural to feel some anxiety when you take a test. In fact, it can be counter-productive not to have an awareness of the importance of the
task at hand. But test anxiety is something different from heightened concern.
Here are some websites with information on how to handle test anxiety associated with graduate school entrance exams:
