GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT
J.P. Wieck
May 2007 Accounting Graduate

JP_WieckWhat is your job title?  I am an accountant

How did you find this job? When I was in college, I looked at possible internships through the WT database, I think there were 2 or 3 at the time.  I applied for one and didn't get it so I applied for another one that I liked that had a good starting hourly rate so I applied and interviewed and was chosen.

I didn't start looking for a full time job right after college because I had plans to visit Europe and travel a bit.  I'd worked summers in Alaska and saved up money so a friend and I went to Europe for a few months.  When I got back, I stopped in to say hi to the company I'd internshipped with and we began to talk about me working full time for them.

How is your job going so far? Right now, I'm working part time because I am studying for the CPA.  I've passed 2 of the 4 tests.  I'm helping mostly with tax return preparation such as individual, corporate, partnerships, estates, and non-profits.  I'm also learning a little bit about auditing.  There's a lot to learn, but the people I work for are very patient and helpful.

What services did you use at Career & Counseling services? I used the resume workshop, I checked out the part time jobs, and I participated in the internship program.

Is there anything you would have done differently at WT?  I probably would not have gone to college right out of high school.  I think if I had waited, I would have grown up a little before I came to college.

Also, if you wait to go to college, you will probably be doing some pretty crummy jobs to get by.  When I went to Alaska and worked in a fish factory, it made me realize how many other jobs I could do with a college education.  Sometimes it doesn't even matter what the degree is.  Some companies just want someone with any degree.

Do you have any advice for other students? Don't get C's and D's.  You don't have to get all A's in everything, but with a pretty good effort, you should be able to get B's.

  • All typed dialogue will be in real time, such as instant messages, so you will not encounter lag time between posts.

Landing Your Very First Job
from Careerbuilder.com

Starting your first job search is exciting, intimidating and, above all, confusing. You've undoubtedly received plenty of career-related advice from parents, friends and others. One person may encourage you to pursue an administrative position with a large, well-known firm since having a recognized name on your resume may serve you well in the future.

Someone else may feel it's best for you to apply for jobs with small companies because you could quickly advance your career. Confused about which fork in the road to take? Here's some advice that's virtually guaranteed to point you in the right direction:

Leave your parents at home. While you are wise to pick their brains on occasion, you should not rely on them solely or too heavily. Remember that you run this show!fisherman

Don't focus on 'perfection.' While we all want to land the "perfect" job -- with the great salary and a corner office, that doesn't typically happen for your first job. Remember to evaluate the entire compensation package!

Stay true to your school. Folks you've met at WT can be very beneficial to you in your job search. Consider using the Career Services office, joining the Alumni Association and keeping in touch with faculty for a leg up in your job search.

Make friends. Be sure that everyone you know knows that you are looking for a job. It's likely that someone can point you toward a firm that's hiring, has been employed by a company you would like to work for or can pass along the contact information of a helpful recruiter.

Remember, honesty is the best policy. Don't even think about exaggerating your experience or padding your resume. Background and reference checks are common today. Misstating experience will likely come back to hurt you! Tailor your resume and cover letter to target each job you seek.

Above all, remember that finding a new job can take weeks or even months. Try not to become discouraged. Take a smart, careful approach to your job search, and you will land your first position before you know it.
