Know When To Walk Away

dress shoesKenny Rogers sings a song titled The Gambler (catch him on youtube here!) which offers advice for gambling that also can be applied to the job search process.  The chorus line for the song goes like this, "know when to hold'em, know when to fold'em, know when to walk away, know when to run." As a job seeker, there are times that you need to walk away from an opportunity you have been pursuing.

Has this ever happened to you?  You applied for a job that you really wanted.  Its been two to three weeks and you've called several times to see if you'd been selected for an interview only to be told that applications are still being screened.  How about this one? You've interviewed for a really fantastic job and the manager asked that you follow-up with her in a week. You've left two messages and emailed once but have not received any feedback from the manager. The dilemma is what should you do now?

Liz Ryan of BusinessWeek online, has a few tips for you when you find yourself getting the run-around or stalled by employers. Liz gives you 7 signs that employers are just not that into you, and you'd be better served pursuing other opportunities: silence after initial contact; difficulty scheduling a phone screen; last-minute interview changes;delay in post-interview contact; too many changes in the process; slow follow-up after second interview; and delay in extending the offer.

Work at a Summer Camp:
The EASY BUTTON way to
build your skills!

QUICK QUESTION: How can you make money, increase your business network, and develop skills to build a resume all in a couple of months?

Question button

ANSWER:  Get a job at a summer camp.

West Texas A&M University is hosting a summer camp fair on January 30 from 9:30am to 1:00pm in the JBK.  Approximately twenty summer camps from the local area as well as from central Texas and the neighboring states will be on hand to present employment opportunities with their organizations.

Students who work at summer camps come away from the experience with many transferable skills.  They also meet peers from other universities as well as develop relationships with students' families and camp staff which expand networking opportunities.

If these intangibles are not reason enough to work at a summer camp, consider this:  the summer camp will be paying YOU.

So, mark your calendars for January 30, and then pick a camp for a great summer adventure.

Wellness and the Workplace

The New Year is here, and it's time for new year's resolutions.  How about lose weight, or stop smoking, or simply get in better shape?  Any of these resolutions would have personal benefits, but all of these resolutions could have a professional pay off, too.

As employers continue to look at ways to cut costs to increase a company's bottom line, one of the areas that is being studied is health care.  In a 2006 survey conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management Workplace Forecast, HR professionals identified "rising health care costs as the top factor that HR professionals believe will have the largest impact on the workplace."  In addition, "employers are shifting responsibility for managing employer-provided health care benefits from the employer to the employee."

It looks like companies are going to be proactive in addressing health care issues before they become crises. woman working out Both smoking and diabetes can, under certain circumstances, be positively managed by changes in behavior.  Former smokers and diabetic patients who are able to manage their diabetes through diet and exercise are healthier employees in general.  Companies are seeing a resulting decrease in health care costs when these health issues are managed in a proactive fashion.

Indeed, "Three-quarters of respondents (76.1 percent) rate Make Appropriate Choices Concerning Health and Wellness, e.g. nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, work-life effectiveness as an emerging content area that will be "most critical" for future graduates."

Read a paper about employers' perspectives on the workplace, - information specific to the employer emphasis on wellness is on page 51.
