Graduate SPOTLIGHT
BRANDI COTABrandi Cota

1. What is your job title? Environmental Scientist at Talon LPE

2. How did you find this job?  I found the job for Talon LPE by talking and submitting a resume to a representative at the Career Fair, which was hosted by Career Services in the Activities Center at WTAMU.

I was also offered a position at Halliburton after I applied and received an interview through Career Services.  Also, I interviewed and was offered a position at ASK Laboratories because they found my resume on the WT Experience resume database.

However, I believe that I made the right choice by becoming part of the team at Talon LPE because there are so many different opportunities and room for advancement with this company.  The decision for me was easy, because during the interview I really felt that Talon LPE was where I belonged.  Plus, this company has excellent personnel and great benefits.

3. How is your job going so far?  I started my job about a month ago and am really enjoying it thus far.  I get to learn so many new things everyday, and the people I work with are always willing to lend a helping hand.  Even though my major was in chemistry and biology, I have really enjoyed the environmental field because I feel as if I am making a difference by helping monitor, clean up, and protect the environment.

4. What services did you use at Career & Counseling services?  I used many services at Career and Counseling services.  The first thing I decided to utilize was the resume workshop which was very helpful because I finally got a grasp as to what a resume was supposed to include. After gathering my resume and having Career Services critique it, I put my resume in the Experience database.

I actually had several companies look at my resume and call me for an interview after I placed my resume on Experience.  After the resume was completed and submitted I decided that I needed to brush up on my interviewing skills.  Therefore, I went to a mock interview where I was placed in an interviewing atmosphere and then was critiqued over my performance.

5. Is there anything you would have done differently at WT?  I believe that I would have become more involved in several different clubs and organizations.  I think that becoming involved in the school is very important because it allows the student to become more well-rounded and gives them a sense of belonging.

6. Do you have any advice for other students?  Honestly, the best thing that I ever did was get involved with Career and Counseling Services.  If it weren't for them I am not sure that I would have a job at all.  I really believe that they put every effort into helping each student find a career that is best suited for them.  I wish that I would have gone to them way earlier than the summer before I graduated.  However, if you are willing to put forth the effort, listen to and then follow their advice, you will be well on your way to your dream job.

7. What was the most fun spring break you had while in college? What did you do?  The best spring break trip I have ever taken was Spring Break 2007.  My friends and I took a trip to San Antonio for four days.  We went to the River Walk one evening for dinner at the Hard Rock Café, which has absolutely amazing food and atmosphere.  We also went to Schlitterbaun Water Park where we spent a whole day riding rides and relaxing in the lazy river.  Finally, we went to Sea World where we got to see many different animal shows.  It was the best time because I was with my friends, and it was my last spring break in college.

SPRING BREAK AND YOUR CAREER

beach ballAhhhhhh, it's spring break.  Time for catching up on sleep, just generally chillin' out, and maybe doing a little informational interview.
Huh!?!

That's right - Spring Break is a great time to take a deep breath, think about what you've learned in your college career, and then do a little career exploration so that when you return from spring break you're on the right track.

So what can you do during spring break that will put you a step closer to a rewarding career but that won't occupy too many of those leisurely afternoons you've got planned?

Start with an informational interview.  Look around you.  Who has that great job that looks like it would be so cool?  Go ahead, give them a call.  Say something like, "I am interested in the kind of work that your organization does, and would like to know more about it.  I am not looking for a job.  Instead, I need information and possibly advice about how to get into this field and what the work is like.  Could I meet with you at your convenience to ask a few questions?"

That's the first step.  For tips on making this interview effective and enjoyable for both of you, visit our website.

Other ideas to explore during Spring Break might be:

Exploring the O*NET - an internet site that is "Making occupational information interactive and accessible for all"

Take MyPlan.  This is an online career assessment WTAMU makes available to our students.  Spend an hour or so during spring break taking MyPlan.  If after taking the assessment you'd like a career counselor to visit with you about your career options, you may contact  Career & Counseling Services.  The counselor will also be able to answer any questions or give you direction about a variety of career issues. (NOTE:  MyPlan requires an authorization code to use it.  Contact Career & Counseling Services for this number.)

OK, now relax and  interview!

Spring Break Safety Tips

luggageIt's March and you are looking forward to spring break.

Maybe you plan to relax at an exotic location, spend the week with family enjoying home cooked meals, or simply stay local to be with friends.  Whatever your plans may be, it's important to keep your vacation safe.

* Apply sunscreen, even if it is cloudy outside.  You don't want to spend the week looking like a lobster and feeling miserable.

* Use the buddy system.  Attend parties, clubs, and functions as a group.  Keep an eye out for each other while at the function and plan in advance to leave together.  Do not leave with someone you do not know, even if you plan to party at local clubs.

* If you are of age and decide to consume alcoholic beverages follow this rule: space and pace.  Alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated drinks.  Do not accept open drinks from strangers as date rape drugs are usually colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Limit your consumption of alcohol as it impairs your judgment and can leave you spending valuable spring break time on the bathroom floor.

* Decide on sexual issues before beginning your spring activities.  Make up your mind about your limits, what type of birth control will you use, and be sure to have the method with you.  Trying to make these important decisions while under the influence of alcohol or in the heat of the moment can lead to regrets, unplanned pregnancy, and STDs.

* If taking a road trip, check your car's fluids and belts BEFORE you hit the road.  Check to see that your tags and inspection are legal and that you have an up-to-date insurance card.  Pack snacks and extra water in case the car breaks down.

* Use common sense when staying in a hotel.  Keep the door locked at all times and use the peephole before opening the door.  Place money, items containing personal information, and other valuables in the room safe.

* It is a good idea to let family and friends back home know your travel plans.  Leave the name and number of your hotel, your travel dates, and cell phone information with someone you trust who will not be traveling with you.
Have a happy and safe spring break!
