JOB SEARCH TIMELINE
"Put off until tomorrow what I should have done yesterday"
If this looks a whole lot like your job search game-plan, you are a procrastinator.
Wikipedia defines procrastination as a type of avoidance behavior which is characterized by deferment of actions or tasks to a later time. Psychologists often cite procrastination as a mechanism for coping with the anxiety associated with starting or completing any task or decision. Dr. Piers Steel, Ph.D., a leading researcher in the field of procrastination says that about 60% of the population said they procrastinate somewhat and about 6% indicated they often procrastinate.
Have you procrastinated about starting your job search? Are you getting anxious or stressed out about finding a job? No time is better than right now to get moving on the activities that we know will help you land the job of your dreams. Career Services has a checklist of things we suggest you do to find a job starting your Freshmen year in college - all the way through post graduation.
Stop procrastinating. Act NOW!

THE SUMMER OF THE ZOMBIE PARENTS!!!
One of my fondest memories of summer is sitting around a campfire telling horror stories. Here's one! Once upon a time a young son returned home from college one summer only to learn that his parents had been transformed into the living dead! Sometime between fall and summer they had become overbearing, intrusive and mindless monsters making unreasonable demands upon the poor young student. They tried to suck the very life out of him by wanting to spend every waking minute with him.
They would growl and howl in the middle of the night while the son was doing his laundry and playing video games. They'd be up at the crack of dawn with bloodshot eyes and vapid breath every time the son would return from a night of simple festivities. They would withdraw in disdain and disgust from simple things like the son having cold pizza for breakfast. It was the summer of the Zombie parents attack!!
Returning home after the first year of college can be particularly unnerving for both the student and the parents. A s a student, you've learned to become independent and are not used to the rules and regulations of the old house. Your parents are not sure how to react either. On the one hand, you're still their child and it is their house by cracky! On the other hand, they know you're an adult now and the same rules don't necessarily apply.
Some students can seem like Zombies to parents too-returning home with tattoos and piercings in places no one thought possible, spouting off about Existentialism and the industrialization of 3rd world countries and the other wild stuff those wacky professors are teaching you. So go easy on them. It's rough for them too.
The best thing you can do is to communicate with your parents. Get a general idea about what their expectations are for you while you're home and negotiate with them about your own expectations. Hours, scheduling activities with or without each other, transportation, whether to work or not while home, laundry-all these things can be simple daily things that can trigger conflict, if not discussed adequately.
Just talk! It will go a long way toward avoiding getting grabbed one day by that hairy hand in the dark we call conflict. Read this article to get some more tips on what conflicts to avoid or address.
Have a great summer and watch out for that guy with the hook too!
