CAREER EXPO 2007 - 10/18/07

"Dress professionally - remove nose rings, cover up tattoos!"

"Be more assertive when approaching a table for information. Some students looked nervous and shy. Everyone is here to offer information and help."

"Stress the importance of grooming and dress."

"Career shoppers should come to this event as well as those searching for job."

These statements were all made by employers in attendance at our Career EXPO last semester in response to the question: "What suggestions do you have for us to share with our students about their job search?"

Another opportunity for you to visit with a large number of employers in one location is just around the corner - Career EXPO 2007 is scheduled for Thursday, October 18th from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM in the Virgil Henson Activities Center Ballroom.

This is your chance to discuss career options and full time job opportunities as well as internships with a wide variety of employers. A complete list of those attending is available on our website! Whether you graduate this year or sometime in the future ... you can benefit from attending this job fair.

Mark your calendar now so you don't miss this incredible opportunity to learn more about your choices in the 'real world.'

PRE-FAIR RECEPTION for STUDENTS & EMPLOYERS

Etiquette is "the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life." (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/etiquette)

To put it another way, etiquette is being comfortable around other people and making them feel comfortable around you.

Companies are paying attention to how their employees handle themselves in social situations. An employee's use of proper business etiquette can either help or hinder his company's bottom line.

Increase your etiquette knowledge and put it to practice with real employers at our first ever pre-fair reception. This event will begin with a short session with an etiquette coach who will walk us through the ins and outs of professional networking in a social setting. Then the networking will begin as you visit, in a more relaxed environment, employers in town for the next day's Career EXPO. The reception is scheduled for Wednesday night, October 17th from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

You MUST let us know that you are planning to attend - we are limiting it to the first 100 students who call (806) 651-2345. All current students who RSVP and attend will be entered into a drawing to win a laptop computer!

Finally, here's a Yahoo! finance article that shows why knowledgeable networking in a social situation is important and how to become adept at business etiquette.

Counseling Corner - STRESS

While running on the treadmill one day, I decided to challenge my endurance by increasing the intensity and the distance of my workout.  I was doing great until I had reached the peak.  I was feeling more tired than I normally felt and was beginning to wonder if I hadn't bitten off more than I could chew.  I wasn't ready to stop, so I just told myself I'd go another 5 minutes and then quit.  When I hit that 5 minutes, I realized that I wasn't feeling as bad as I thought I would, so I decided to push myself for 5 more.  I kept doing this until before I knew it I had reached my initial intended goal.  By focusing on just 5 minutes at a time, I reached my goal despite being overwhelmed at one point.

I have found this attitude to be valuable in life as well.  We often set out on lofty tasks and usually in the middle our tank starts to run low.  Rather than just giving up though, we should realize this is our edge and push it just a little bit more.  Usually, we will find that we have much more gas in our tank than it feels like.

When mid-semester rolls around, it can often feel like we're running out of gas.  The beginning is easy because that's when we have most of our energy and motivation.  The end is often easier because we can "see the light at the end of the tunnel".  It's that mundane middle that can get us, but only if we let it.  So if you feel your gas is just about gone this mid-semester, just focus on pushing yourself just a little more.  I think you'll find that when you break things down, it's not so overwhelming after all.
