Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some answers to common questions about working as a student on the
WTAMU campus.
1. Where is the Student Employment Services (SES)
Office located and what hours is SES open?
SES is located in Room #120 of the Jack B. Kelley student center. Office hours
are from 8:00 - 5:00 Monday through Friday in the fall and spring. In the
summer SES is open 7:30 am to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 am to
11:30 am on Fridays. Students can search the SES jobs database over the
internet or in the SES office.
2. What are the advantages of working on campus?
On-campus jobs are usually clerical, custodial, or related to computer and food
service areas. Often departments are willing to arrange a student's work around
a class schedule. It is, of course, advantageous for students to schedule
classes to accommodate a consistent work schedule. For example, they might
create blocks of time for work such as 8:00am - 12:00pm or 1:00pm - 5:00pm.
3. Who is eligible to use Student Employment Services (SES)?
In order to obtain an on-campus position, you must be a currently enrolled WTAMU
student. The only exception to this is during the summer when you must be
either (a) enrolled the previous spring or (b) planning to enroll in the fall.
4. What is the Federal Work Study (FWS) program?
Work-study is a federally funded part-time employment program coordinated
through Student Financial Aid. Work Study funding is awarded as part of
your financial aid package. However, in order to receive the benefits of
the award, you must obtain an on-campus position through the traditional
interview and hire procedure. You will not be assigned a work-study position
nor is the money put on your account with the Business Office to directly pay
your fees. Rather, it is paid to you through bi-weekly paychecks as
compensation for the time you work in an on-campus job. Positions are posted
with Student Employment Services specifically for work-study approved students;
however, you may also work at ANY on-campus positions and still take
advantage of your work-study award.

5. How many hours can a student work on campus?
Although, 10-20 hours per week is the recommended work week for students, more
hours can be worked. However, students should not work more than 20
hrs/wk if at all possible. WTAMU is dedicated to the educational success
of our students and does not wish to keep students from their studies or limit
participation in campus activities because of a demanding work load.
6. What do I do after I am hired?
Once hired by a WTAMU department, you MUST
come by Student Employment Services to fill out
employment paperwork. You must bring
provide proof of employment eligibility. It is illegal and a
liability for you to work without completing this paperwork. If you are
an international student, additional documentation is needed.
** WTAMU is an equal opportunity employer and will
consider all applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex,
disability or national origin.

Services facilities, here are the guidelines and policies for properly doing
so:
-
You can access our Job Search Engine

you must come by our office at least once to register your password.
-
...or you can come by our office in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center to search
for a job opportunity via our online computer terminals there.
-
In addition, some job opportunities listed through Student Employment Services
have specified requirements, such as a Typing requirement, that you must meet
or exceed before viewing detailed job information. Online testing
facilities are provided in our office to determine your level of ability in the
areas of Typing, Spelling and 10-Key. For obvious security reasons, these
tests are administered through our office, only. In addition, all job
requirements and rules regarding Federal Workstudy eligibility will be enforced
on our web-based search engine, as well as in our office.
-
In order to use any of our facilities, you must be a
current student of West Texas A&M University. Any person attempting
to utilize our system who is not a current student may be violating university
rules and regulations as well as State Laws or Regulations regarding computer
security and privacy. In addition, students who lend their respective
Buff Gold Card numbers to other persons for the purpose of illicit access, as
defined above, may lose their privilege to use the Student Employment Services
facilities.
-
In order to ensure the validity of our online testing facilities, students must
agree not to "pose as another student" when taking our various
tests. This is considered blatant cheating and may result in termination
of privileges to use the Student Employment Services facilities, as well as any
other university-mandated disciplinary action.
